Be sure you grab Season 1: Episode 1 - You don't want to miss this series!

About the books:

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there were zombies...

That's how it all started. Authors have created a major problem with stories like Cinder, The Dark Queen, and Asleep, and it's wreaking havoc here in Ever After. Our queens are fighting for their lives.

Rather like Mother Nature, keeper of the fine balance that's life in your world, tales that begin with "Once upon a time" were never meant to be messed with.

Now, Ariel is underwater with all the defenses she's been launching, Aurora hasn't slept in weeks, and Rapunzel is tangled in... Well, I can't even begin to tell you.

Rather than try, I'll let you see for yourself. You and I will talk again afterward--if I survive long enough. So, as our fateful story begins:

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away...

~~~~~~
If you want to color Cinderella's shoe, we've made it available as a free download/printable.
Get it here.
How amazing is this?
Don't forget to come see me at Roanoke Author Invasion April 8! I'll have some really amazing goodies for you all!
by Rebecca Barber
(Book 3 Swimming Upstream)
SYNOPSIS — Tyler Andrews, Olympic swimming superstar, has always gotten his way—until he falls in love. Living in the spotlight was just part of Tyler’s life. Ava has lived her life in the shadows—and that’s exactly how she likes it. But after fulfilling her lifelong dream to have her debut novel published, her world is turned on its head by Tyler’s fame. She writes novels for a reason—it’s a quiet, peaceful profession. The last thing she wants is to be thrown into the spotlight.
Love and life don’t always fit as well as fame and fortune.
Frustrated by Ava’s continuous reluctance to publicly embrace their relationship, Tyler takes every opportunity to make his own declarations—social media posts, visiting her at work, and even crashing her first television promotional appearance, which she grudgingly accepted as part of her publishing deal.
So when something changes and Tyler abruptly pulls away, Ava knows something is terribly wrong.
With Olympic selection looming, Ava’s publisher eagerly awaiting a sequel to her hit novel, and day-to- day life taking a toll, Tyler starts to see that life is much easier in the pool than…
Disclaimer: These books are free at time of posting. Please check the price before you one click. Also, I haven't read these titles, so I can't recommend one way or the other. You decide.
Let's GOOOO!
Title: The Dimension Thieves Episode #1
Author: Misty Provencher
Genre: Young Adult Sci-Fi
Buy Links: Amazon  ~  B&N  ~  iBooks  ~  Kobo
Blurb:
Nominated for Serial Series of the Year at UtopYA Conference, 2015.
EPISODE 1 in The Dimension Series. Clean action/adventure read, suitable for ages 13 and up.
The Dimension Series is a series of serial shorts, releasing once a month from January to December 2015. It is a clean, New Adult series also suitable for some Young Adult readers, due to mild language, mild violence. However, readers who do not enjoy exciting cliffhangers, or look forward to the mouth-watering anticipation of month-to-month episodes should be warned...if you lay eyes on this story...THERE IS NO GOING BACK.
Antythera is the new Earth.
Why?
Because that’s what President Baro, ruler of the planet, wants to call it.
And if you don’t agree, the President will have you Droned.
The world has become a much smaller place since the lower and middle classes have been converted to mindless servants.  Free will, granted only to the elite, is in jeopardy of complete extinction.
But Force Steele, son to one of the President’s highest ranking advisors, can’t live under the thumb of his controlling father, or the President, any longer. Force has dedicated himself to eradicating Droning, but when the President orders the Antidote Gear destroyed—the part of the machine that could free the drones by reversing the program that controls them—all is lost. Lacking necessary materials, there is literally no way in Force’s world to replace the one-of-a-kind gear.
Force’s only choice is to partner with shifty mechanic, Calerbius Brown, and embark on a risky mission that will take Force and his rag-tag crew across the lateral dimensions, where they must often steal materials—even from themselves—in order to fix their own dwindling world.
Title: Haunted
Author: Willow Cross
Genre: Supernatural Ghosts & Hauntings
Have you ever heard something go bump in the night and wondered if someone was there? Only to go looking for the cause of the noise and find nothing at all. Or how about unexplainably feeling like you’re being watched when you’re completely alone? Things disappearing for no reason or strange ghostly footsteps in the hall?
This book is a collage of short stories about a few of the otherworldly experiences I’ve had. Although they are not movie worthy, you may find them interesting. All the stories are %100 true. Nothing has been added for dramatic effect.
Why a Free Promotion?
Happy Tuesday, everyone! Today I'm gonna talk with you all about giving your book away for free and why people do it. There are some pros and cons and I'll be going over all of it. So, if you're ready, grab your pens and notebooks and let's get going!
First, let's discuss the stigma surrounding free.
You've just spent six to twelve months writing and editing a novel. Your blood, sweat, and tears have gone into this story on the page, and you're frustrated about giving it away for nothing. Understandable. Believe me, I get it. Anything you spend that much time developing might sting when someone downloads it for nothing. There's also the fear that people will think you can't sell a book and have to give them away (not true, but you can see where they might jump to that conclusion). However, maybe it's time to change the way we look at free and try to see where it begins to behoove us when we give a book away.
We're gonna have a moment discussing free print books.
Now, everyone is probably familiar with the giveaways on Goodreads. Why do we bother giving away print copies of our books (on that site, and in other giveaways)? Because they're signed, and we want people to sort of covet what we take the time to write our names in. Most of all, we want readers to add our books to their TBR list. That's where the key is. We want to be remembered.
Why does that make a difference? Well, sometimes, when a reader is excited about winning a certain book, they'll go on to buy it if they don't win it. Make sense?
Okay, let's move on to giveaways of e-books.
These work a little bit differently. When you give away an e-book, it's more about what's inside besides the story or what else is coming that matters.
For example:
  • A snippet or two of other books you've written
  • This is the first of a series (to be released)
  • Your social media contact information
  • Giving a sample of your writing to potential fans
If you're running a free promotion, there should be some reason behind it. Either you're trying to build a fan base, you want your rank on Amazon to jump up really high (some hit the top 100 in their genre), or you're hyping up another book that's A. Just been released or B. Will be coming soon.
There are many reasons behind free. Make sure you're deciding what yours are before you jump on the bandwagon. That way, you can have some way to measure your success. After all, you need something to snag a new fan, right? Rafflecopter giveaways can't carry everything. But, like anything, there are cons.
The cons of free:
  • Many people download a free book and never read it
  • If no protection, your book could end up on a pirate site perma-free
  • Your book isn't put in front of those who would enjoy it; rather, it's sent to everyone
  • You make no money off this publication while it's free
  • You may end up with a troll review or two
If you're willing to brave these cons, and put your hope in readers who will get hold of your book and read the heck out of it, you're ready to do free. Like I said above, be sure you know what your ultimate goal is.
Speaking of free and giveaways, come on back to the blog tomorrow for your chance to win a couple of books and some Amazon cash!
How about you? Have you done free promotions? What did you get out of it?
Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE ON!
Writing Prompts and Exercises PLUS a Kindle Fire Giveaway
Happy Friday, good people of the blogosphere! Using the information we went over this week, I'm giving you some writing prompts to help you flex your muscles. These may seem a little weird, but go with it, okay? Grab those pens and notebooks and let's get going!
Today, I'm encouraging you to be a:
That's right; don't plan anything out with these prompts. Just write. Make your goal at least one page of words for each prompt.
  • Betty and Mark are having an argument which you're involved in. If you're a male, you've slept with Betty behind Mark's back. If you're a female, use it the other way around. Keep it in first person, present tense. By the end of the scene, I want to know how it happened and why your friendship is (was) so deep with the other person. **RESTRICTION** Don't describe their specific appearance. No details on what they're wearing or what they look like.
  • Angela is speaking to you, the writer. Let her tell you what you're going to do tomorrow. Set the scene in first person, future tense. You decide on the setting. **RESTRICTION** She can't be a fortune teller or a psychic.
  • A burglar is breaking into a house. Your reader is the thief. Write this in second person, past tense. By the end of the scene, I want to know why your thief decided to become a criminal and what their worries were as they did it. Describe the house and the things they're stealing. I want to know why they chose the items they did. **RESTRICTION** They aren't allowed to rob anyone who's wealthy.
  • Steve stepped into a time machine. He's going back in the past to right a wrong. You decide on the relationship between Steve and the person he's protecting/saving with his actions. Write this in third person limited, past tense. By the end of the scene, I want to know everything he experienced/thought as he rode in that machine. **RESTRICTION** You can't use someone Steve knows and I don't want to know anything that happened after he arrives at the location. This is about why he's doing it and for whom.
  • You're watching a group of kids on the playground, fighting. You're an observer and have no dog in the fight. Let's see third person omniscient in present tense. By the end of the scene, I should know what the fight was about, what every character is thinking/feeling, and everything they see/do for at least ten minutes. **RESTRICTION** One of the characters must be disabled in some major way. This character must end up as the hero/winner, and I must feel something for him/her.
I hope this gives you all something to do over the weekend. Remember, have fun with it.
Your Supporting Cast of Characters
Happy Thursday, good people of the blogosphere! Just two more work days until the weekend! I hope you all have something awesome to look forward to. Today, I'm talking about your supporting cast of characters. These are the folks that make your world seem real, the ones your character will interact with on a limited bases, and/or minor characters we aren't supposed to give two shakes about. If any of you have downloaded my free PDF, A Novel Checklist, you'll know there's a whole section, printable on its own, to assist you in creating dynamic characters. But you can, and should, also use it for minor characters. Before I digress too far, grab your pens and notebooks and let's get going!
There are three basic character types:
Major Characters are the ones your story is about. I'm sure, if you've been around the blog a while, you have a good idea of how to create awesome characters that your reader can connect with. So, I'm not going to spend any more of your time on those. If you haven't been around a while, you can catch up on all the posts on characterization HERE.
Moving on...
Minor Characters are the ones that support the major characters, but people your reader isn't supposed to care too much about. These folks may help move the plot along or be assistants to the big action, but they're always disposable. Now, I've had minor characters assert themselves and become major characters, but they didn't start out "life" that way. These entities show up, perform one or two things in the plot, then disappear. We don't expect them to come back later and take over the spotlight.
Just in case they do, you should have a character bio on them.
Now, these characters can jump out of the story and yell, "Ta-da!" to announce themselves; but they should do what they came to do and get out. Make them eccentric, bigger than life, or obsessive. Readers will notice the person, expect action, and be glad when they leave.
Walk-Ons and Placeholder Characters are exactly what their name implies: temporary. They're background noise that allow you to create a realistic world. If you want them to be forgotten, don't give them a name and don't make them anything other than a stereotype. These will be clerks in stores, delivery drivers, mailmen/women, doctors, nurses, etc... Every person you'd find in the real world, that lives in the background and goes unnoticed, are your walk-ons and placeholders. Don't give them traits that make them stand out.
If one of your placeholders starts to make themselves a nuisance, cut them from your text altogether or change what it is about them that's making them like glue. Perhaps it's wardrobe choices, maybe it's a larger-than-life personality. No matter what it is, find it and eradicate the character. Don't give your reader unnecessary distractions.
I hope this gives you all something to work with. I'll be back tomorrow with some prompts to help your brain along.
What story have you read lately where a walk-on was overdone or a minor character stole the spotlight?
Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE ON!
Beating Middle of the Book Blahs
Happy Tuesday, good people of the blogosphere! Today we're talking about middle of the book blahs and how to overcome them. So grab your pens and notebooks and let's get going, shall we?
Again, this is another section of the class offered over on IBGW.
We've all been there. That point where the character is dragging along on their journey toward triumph or failure of their ultimate goal. It's the dreaded middle of the book. After the doorway and before the culmination and reveal of all that's interesting. But how do you overcome the blahs? How do you keep your story from plodding along like a draught horse rather than bringing excitement like the thoroughbreds running in the Kentucky Derby?
A few things you can do:
  1. Add a subplot. This should be done rarely and with care. Your subplot can be brought to a head just before your main plot, but don't let it take over and don't do it too often. A well-known subplot for many readers is the one in the Hunger Games series. I know I reference it often, but it uses many literary devices (and does it well).
  2. Introduce a new character. From out of the wild, here they come, that new character you may have mentioned before but decides to take on a new role. Or, you may not have mentioned this character. Perhaps they only show up in the middle of the book to bring another facet to the action. They need to make the protagonist's life a little bit harder.
  3. Find the glue between the antagonist and the protagonist and make it stronger. Make it matter. Show the reader why these two are in direct opposition by a little reveal of the past.
Now, those are just a couple of suggestions. The options are endless because it's your imagination. Dig deeply and don't allow your reader to go to sleep.
Join me tomorrow and we'll go over how to trim the fat from the middle of a book.
What devices do you use to add drama to the middle of your novel?
On another note, if you'd like a new book to read, Taken Before her very Eyes by Wade Faubert, the one I reviewed back in February is free through midnight tonight! See the review here.
Enjoy!
Happy New Year and Promotion Success Tips
Happy 2013, good people of the blogosphere! Oh my... seems doomsday wasn't doomsday after all. That's very good news because I'm starting off the new year with a post about promotions and how to run an effective freebie. Get out your pens and notebooks because here we go!
We all know we want to run an effective freebie promotion. But the question is how to get our freebie in the hands of as many readers as humanly possible? I'm going to share what I've done and how it's helped my own sales and visibility. This is in no way a hard and fast rule post. If you feel like you can add to it, by all means, post a comment below and share!
Without further ado, here's the checklist!
6 weeks ahead:
  1. Plan your freebie date. Be sure to include at least one weekday in your schedule.
  2. Create an excel spreadsheet for people or companies that do freebie listings with the following columns: Twitter name, website URL, Submission guidelines, benefit (what they'll do for you), and time to submit.
  3. Start building your freebie submission database.
  4. Plan a promo leading up to your freebie for your blog.
  5. Reach out to your network and schedule guest posts and/or giveaway promotions via rafflecopter or your choice of sites that will go live on various days of your freebie.
  6. Send out some copies of your book for reviews that might go live around the time of your freebie. Be respectful of the reviewers you send your book to and ask politely if they would mind posting around those dates.
  7. Set up some author interviews to go live around your freebie dates. Be sure and tell the interviewer about your freebie because it's added value for their readers.
4 weeks ahead:
  1. Start submitting your freebie to the relevant sites if you haven't already.
  2. Double check with your reviewers, network, and buddies to be sure all is on track.
  3. Keep a folder with your freebie submissions in your e-mail so you can be sure to check back with those folks during your giveaway so you can promote their services as well.
2 weeks ahead:
  1. Submit to the freebie sites that require a shorter notice.
  2. Set up your rafflecopter if you're doing one.
  3. Plan and pre-write posts for your promotion on your blog.
1 week ahead:
  1. Schedule a Goodreads and Facebook event for your promotional posts.
  2. Start your promotions.
  3. Double check your network to be sure all is in order.
  4. Consider a new rafflecopter to start day of that encourages folks to share the details of your freebie.
Day of:
  1. Get the word out about your promotion. Schedule tweets, Facebook posts, and LinkedIN posts to let folks know you're live.
  2. If you did a rafflecopter, it should end on this date and the winners announced. If you're doing a new one just for the freebie with relevant tasks, launch it on this day.
  3. Make sure you promote those blogs and services that are promoting your freebie.
  4. Tweet your freebie @ those that require it.
  5. Make a list of the above and check it every day during your promotion
The number one most important thing to remember during your freebie: DON'T BE HUMBLE!! Tout your work with your review ratings, number of copies downloaded, and blurbs from your reviews! Let people know what a great product they're getting for FREE!
